Dear Herlihy/McGahey Family, I only found out about Pat's passing recently. I am so terribly sorry. I met her in Russian class at Brown! She, a professor, was in a class with teenagers(practically) and she fitted right in! We'd make silly skits today, and forgot that she was a well-known professor. She was always mischievous, cracking us up with her jokes and sense of humor. She extended her warmth to everyone. She was always huggable and made you feel good just to be near her. I cried when I read about her passing. And cried again when I picked up "The Alcoholic Empire" and saw her inscription: "To my dearest Hilda and Doug..." I will miss her and think of her. She talked about her kids and grandkids with pride. I only remember the name "Nathaniel" and I tried to look up Nathaniel Herlihy online to send him a message but there were so many...I hope this message reaches to those who loved her. I sure did, even though I only knew her for a few years, that's just the way Pat made you feel.

My Condolences to the Herlihy/McGahey family: Losing a loved one is never easy and my heart goes out to you. The pain is so real but the God of comfort helped me through that terrible pain when our daughter died and now when my precious husband of 50 years fell asleep in death due to pancreatic cancer. God doesn’t leave us without hope. Notice these few Scriptures of comfort: Revelation 21:4 (no more sadness or death) Isaiah 33:24 (no more sickness) John 5:28, 29 (the Resurrection) Psalms 37:11 (where we will see our loved one) Psalms 37:29 (for how long). When you feel up to reading these few Scriptures, may they be comforting to you as well.

My deepest sympathy to all of the children, grandchildren, extended family, former students, colleagues and friends of Patricia Herlihy, on her passing. Since I live out of state, it was only a sense of loss I felt today (10/27/18) that prompted me to find this news online. I appreciate Irene's call the other day to tell me how seriously ill Pat was and I am sorry I didn't manage to see her a few months ago.

I will always remember how she and David, at Harvard, invited us (my husband, KC, a USF grad who now has Alzheimer's, our young son and me) to attend annual Mather House dinners. A long friendship ensued. After David's passing, Pat always kept in touch, updating me on her literary contributions, professorships, family milestones and travels. We enjoyed a high tea together in San Francisco and she graciously attended my husband's 75th birthday celebration. She was brilliant, humble, ebullient, caring and, with David, so very accomplished; both published scholars in Italian and, she, also, in Russian history.

In later years we stayed in touch and I remained in awe of how well she successfully managed a very full life with grace and caring, all the while dealing with health challenges. She often signed her notes or emails with "hugs," so symbolic of her giving nature. Her presence will be missed by me and all fortunate enough to have known her. Memories of Pat and David will remain in the legacy of family, friends and in their unique literary and scholarly contributions.
